In the Absence of Faith…

…what are we to do?  Can we hope? Can we dream?

How cliche it all is!

Hoping is merely wishing, wanting, and desiring something for the future, right? And dreaming is simply letting the mind wander to a different world for a bit, right?

Hoping and dreaming aren’t such noble deeds. I like to partake in them when I’m in despair. But, how does hope get us there? How does dreaming about something give it to us?

Dreaming. Hoping.

When you’re doing all you can to achieve your hopes and dreams, but your hopes and dreams don’t seem to want to turn into reality, do we keep hoping for those same things?

“I have hope that things will get better” is no more than saying “I really want things to get better.” There is no guarantee.

Faith. Faith is a kind of belief. If you have faith in something, it’s like saying you believe in that thing. There is no doubt in your mind that that thing is real or will be real in the future. Faith keeps people going.

But how do you have faith if nothing in the past has led you to believe that what you place your faith in is real? Can you have faith in something that has never even existed? Can you believe that something will be, even if it never has been before?

I guess you can have faith in something that is trying to exist and you can see it, but you can’t quite feel it or touch it yet.

But then what do you do if you can’t even see it? Do you continue to hope?

And what do you do if no one else has any faith in it either? Do you continue to dream?

What do you do in the absence of faith but the overwhelming presence of despair?

Well, I guess you should continue to hope. You should still dream. You should do everything you can so that you can have faith one day.

If you see no other way but the way that you can’t yet see, you must fight through the despair until you see it. If you want something enough, you have to know it’s out there. It’s waiting for you to find it.

  1. What is life without hope? You’ve gotta keep on hoping. I hope things get MUCH better for you soon!

  2. I also hope you make it to London in the summer (just saw your comment on Cathy’s blog) – it really doesn’t ALWAYS rain. For that you need to go to Ireland, so I’m told. Wales comes a pretty close second in my experience.
